Ruhayli Not Decorating for Ramadhaan

The Ruling on Decorating Houses in Preparation for Ramadhaan

By Shaykh Dr. Sulaymaan ar Ruhaylee حفظه الله

Question:

Ramadhaan is coming, is it permissible for us to decorate our houses with various decorations such as balloons, lanterns and stickers so that our children and us can feel that this month is not like other months?

Answer:

This is from the newly invented innovations.
Placing decorations, lights and colours in the houses, ‘Ramadhaan lanterns’ etc. is from the innovated matters which were introduced to the Muslims in the Fatimid Era and thereafter.

There is no doubt that innovation affects the emotions and beautifies desires.

Ramadhaan approached the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم (and he was more eager than us in seeking goodness) and he did not decorate his house nor his masjid. He did not order for it to be done neither did any of the Companions, Taabi’een or four Guided and followed Khaleefahs.
Indeed I have not read that (this took place) in any book from a recognised scholar of the Ummah.

This matter (of decorating in preparation for Ramadhaan) is connected to Ramadhaan and worship and it is not a custom. It is connected to worship because it is linked to the month of worship so it comes under the issue of worship and not under the issue of customs.

Therefore we must not do this (decorate our homes for Ramadhaan).

We ourselves can feel Ramadhaan by:

1.       Increasing our fasts in Sha’baan as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم  did.
2.       Remembering the virtues of the days of Ramadhaan and
3.       Giving glad tidings when it arrives as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم  did.
