The Psychological Needs of a Child in the
Prophetic Sunnah

In recent times there has been a lot of
interest in the psychological needs of children specifically and of people
generally. However, if a person reflects upon the Sunnah of al Mustapha
Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم , he will find it
filled with magnificent examples of how to fulfil these needs and this was in fact many centuries before those
studies in Educational Psychology took place.
We should not be surprised at that as Allaah,
the Perfect and Exalted made our noble Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم a good role model for us in all situations including tarbiyyah
– educational nurturing.
The educational psychology specialists define a
psychological need as:
“The needs that a child has to develop sound
psychological growth such as the need for love, feeling secure, being valued
etc.
The importance of these needs become apparent
when they have not been fulfilled in the child.
So a lack of fulfilment leads to the child
being prevented from sound emotional growth and it leaves an imprint on the
personality and behaviour of the individual. A person needs love, affection,
being valued and success.
In what follows are summarized examples from the
Sunnah of al Mustapha Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم
which clarify the importance of these aspects and how they were fulfilled in
children surrounding the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.
Firstly, the Need for Love and Compassion:
This is one of the most important psychological
needs of a child. Fulfilling it makes him feel loved and wanted for himself.
This is a basic condition in regulating the life of a child and balancing his
social feelings. Preventing a child from open love with kind merciful treatment
has a negative influence in building the character and emotions of a child. A
child losing love in his youth could be the most important reason for him
deviating later.
Loving a child results in him feeling secure,
at peace and stable and that helps him to develop naturally in terms of
mentally, emotionally and even intellectually. It also protects him from
frustration, worry, conflict and struggles. When a child who has had love,
affection and compassion in his early years faces difficulties later on, he will
lean towards obedience, cooperation, discipline and will accept the limits.
The Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم showed the importance of loving children in their youth when he
made it a virtue of the women of Quraysh. He صلى الله
عليه وسلم said, “The best women are the riders of the camels and the
righteous among the women of Quraysh. They are the kindest women to their
children in their childhood.” [1]
The ways to fulfil this need for love and
compassion include:
1.
Kissing (children).
This is a natural expression of love to
children. Along with that it is a means of fulfilling their need for love and
affection. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
used to go to the suburbs of Madeenah to kiss his suckling son and then return.[2]
The Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم used to kiss his grandchildren al Hasan and al Hussain.[3]
One day a Bedouin came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said “Do you kiss your children? We
don’t kiss them. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
said to him ‘I cannot put mercy in your heart after Allaah has taken it away
from you.’[4]
2.
Hugging (children)
It is narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم hugged al Hasan one day and said, ‘O
Allaah, indeed I love him so love him and love those who love him.’ [5]
Ibn ‘Abbaas رضي
الله عنه said, “The Messenger of Allaah hugged me and said, O Allaah!
Teach him the Book.”[6]
3.
Smiling at Children
The Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم said, “Smiling at your brother is charity.” [7]
‘Abdullaah bin az Zubayr رضي الله عنهما said that he came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم when he was 7 years old to take the pledge
of allegiance and az Zubayr ordered him to do this. So the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم smiled when he saw him coming towards him
then he pledged allegiance. [8]
4.
Treating Children
Equally
This is exemplified in the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, “Fear Allaah and be just between
your children.” [9]
This hadeeth referred to giving in a material concrete sense whereas another
hadeeth clarified the importance of justice regarding giving in the
non-material abstract sense.
Anas رضي الله
عنه narrated that a man was sitting with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and his son came so he kissed him and sat
him on his thigh. Then his daughter came and he sat her in front of him. So the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Will you not
treat them equally?” [10]
In another hadeeth the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Whoever has a daughter and does not
bury her alive (like in the days of Jaahiliyyah) neither does he treat her
badly, nor does he unfairly treat his son better than her, will enter Paradise.[11]
5.
Rubbing the Head of
Children especially the Orphan
The Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم used to visit the Ansaar and rub the heads of their children.[12]
Jaabir bin Samrah رضي الله عنه narrated that I prayed first prayer with
the Messenger of Allaah. Then he went out to his family and I went out with
him. Two boys met him so he started to rub the cheeks of one of them one by
one. He said, as for me, he rubbed my cheek. He said, I found that his hand was
cool or had a fragrance as if it had come out of a perfume seller’s bag.[13]
‘Abdullaah bin Ja’far رضي الله عنهم said, If you saw me, Qutham and
‘Ubaydullaah the two sons of ‘Abbaas when we were young and playing. When the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم passed us on his
riding animal he said, “Raise this one up to me” So he carried me in front of
him. He (pointed to) Qutham and said, “Raise this one up to me” so he placed
him behind him. He said, “Then he rubbed my head three times and said, O Allaah
take care of Ja’far’s children.” [14]
6.
Being Kind and
Playing Around with Children
Mahmood bin Rabee’ah رضي الله عنه said, “When I was a boy of five, I remember,
the Prophet (ﷺ) took water from a
bucket (used for getting water out of a well) with his mouth and threw it on my
face.” [15]
Anas رضي الله
عنه narrated that he said, The Prophet (ﷺ)
used to mix with us to the extent that he would say to a younger brother of
mine, 'O Aba `Umair! What did the Nughair (a kind of bird) do?"[16]
Ibn Hajar رحمه الله “In this there is
permissibility to joke and repeat the joke. It is a Sunnah of permissibility
and not a concession.”
7.
Visiting Sick
Children
The need for love and affection is more
pronounced in times of weakness for people such as sickness. Anas رضي الله عنه narrated that a Jewish boy used to serve
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. When he became sick
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم went to visit him and
said, ‘Accept Islaam’ so he accepted it. [17]
2. The Need for Security
Security is defined as having a wish for safety
and being at ease whilst avoiding worry, anxiety and fear. The first level of
fulfilling this need (for security) is by fulfilling the need for love. Then
after that is removing the child from what will cause fear within himself and
replace what he feels with security by doing the following:
1.
Giving Salaam to a
Child
The salaam means security. Anas رضي الله عنه narrated that he passed by some young
children and gave them salaam and said the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم used to do this.[18]
2.
Avoiding Excessive
Blame and Censure
Anas رضي الله
عنه narrated: I served the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم when he travelled and when he was at home.
By Allaah, he never said of something I had done, ‘why did you do that?’
Neither did he say of something I had not done, ‘Why did you not do that?’ [19]
If you avoid scolding, criticising and
defamation and you suffice with guiding, advising and encouraging it raises the
child’s morale, strengthens his determination and motivation. It gives him
self-worth and the ability to shoulder responsibility. As for excessive blame,
censure and scalding then it has a negative effect on the psychology of the
child. These include fearing people, feeling inadequate and stupid and not
being affected by advice and guidance. An educationalist said, “Do not blame a
child excessively every time, it leads to him seeing blame as insignificant and
he will behave badly.”
3.
The Need for
Recognition and Being Valued
Allaah, the Exalted, honoured mankind.
وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ وَحَمَلْنَاهُمْ
فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ وَرَزَقْنَاهُم مِّنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَفَضَّلْنَاهُمْ
عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٍ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِيلًا
And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam, and We have
carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with at-Tayyibaat (lawful
and good things) and have preferred them above many of those whom We have
created with a marked preferment.
[Suratul Israa 17:70]
Mankind is endowed with honour. Educators
must nurture this feeling of honour within the child and make him proceed upon
a straight path. This feeling of honour is important and lofty educationally
and psychologically.
A person who has honour stays away from
shameful acts and lowly manners by himself. Whoever has lost his honour and
sees himself as insignificant, blocks his own path infront of teachers,
educators and rectifiers unless his honour returns which is not an easy matter.
This need (for honour) is exemplified in
a child’s motivation for others to hold them in a place of esteem, acceptance,
recognition and respect. Fulfilling this need can be done in many ways:
1.
Asking a Child’s
Permission with Regard to his Rights.
In the Saheeh of Bukhaaree and Muslim: A drink (of milk and water)
was brought to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
while a boy was sitting on his right side and old men were sitting on his left
side. He asked the boy, "Will you allow me to give it to these
(people)?" The boy said, "No, by Allah, I will not allow anyone to
take my right from you." Then the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم put the bowl in
the boy's hand.[20]
2.
Using a Child’s
Kunya or Nickname
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
used to call children by their nicknames if they had one. For example, 'O Aba
`Umair! What did the Nughair (a kind of bird) do?"[21]
Another example is, "O Um Khalid! This is Sanah." (Sanah
is an Ethiopian word meaning beautiful).[22]
3.
Avoid Humiliation
and Mocking of a Child
This negates honour and value.
4.
The Need for
Encouragement, Achievement and Self-Realization
The need for encouragement, achievement
and self-realization is one of the important needs in the stages of childhood
due to its big role in discovering the skills and talents that Allaah bestowed
upon the child so that the religion, the Ummah and the Nation can benefit from
them. Also due to its role in fulfilling the realization of the figurative
strength of a believer. These needs are linked to each other in that the child
needs encouragement so that he can achieve and he needs achievement so that he
can realise his self and be a useful believer.
A child’s need for encouragement means
that he needs someone to bring out the self-confidence by Allaah’s blessings
and use it to proceed and achieve.
As for his need to achieve, it comes in
the child’s motivation to overcome difficult situations. To manage ideas, grasp
them, order them and undertake the required task in a good, quick fashion and
if possible independently. A child achieves something which may seem simple in
our eyes but to a child it is a huge accomplishment. This propels him to
undertake other achievements.
This need can be fulfilled in many ways:
1.
Du’aa Supplication
for the Child
From the means of encouragement that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used was du’aa. It is related that the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to make du’aa
for the Companions who were children with what suited their situations at the
time of making the du’aa. An example of this is his making du’aa for Ibn
‘Abbaas رضي الله عنه “O
Allah! Make him a learned scholar in religion.”[23]
The Prophet’s du’aa for Anas رضي الله عنه
"O Allah! Increase his wealth and children, and bestow Your Blessing on
whatever You give him."[24]
2.
Praise of the Child
without Going to Excess
It is reported from the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم that he said to ‘Abdullaah bin Mas’ood رضي الله عنه who was a shepherd when he asked him to
teach him Qur’aan: “Indeed you are a young teacher.”[25]
3.
Asking Children to
do what they are Capable of
Anas رضي الله
عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم came to me while I was playing with some boys. He gave salaam
to us then sent me to do an errand.[26]
5.
The Need for Play
Play is the main activity for children
and through it they discover what is around them and their intellectual,
emotional and social senses develop.
The Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم despite his lofty tasks and the responsibility of his message
used to play with some of the young children and joke with them.
‘Aa’ishah رضي
الله عنها said, “I used to play with dolls in the presence of the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم”[27]

glad tidings of a Word..."

بَابُ قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: {إِذْ قَالَتِ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ يَا مَرْيَمُ}
إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: {فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ}
I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "Amongst all
those women who ride camels (i.e. Arabs), the ladies of Quraish are the best.
They are merciful and kind to their off-spring and the best guardians of their
husbands' properties.' Abu Huraira added, "Mary the daughter of `Imran
never rode a camel."
وَقَالَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ
حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ
رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ " نِسَاءُ قُرَيْشٍ
خَيْرُ نِسَاءٍ رَكِبْنَ الإِبِلَ، أَحْنَاهُ عَلَى طِفْلٍ، وَأَرْعَاهُ عَلَى
زَوْجٍ فِي ذَاتِ يَدِهِ ". يَقُولُ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ عَلَى إِثْرِ ذَلِكَ
وَلَمْ تَرْكَبْ مَرْيَمُ بِنْتُ عِمْرَانَ بَعِيرًا قَطُّ. تَابَعَهُ ابْنُ
أَخِي الزُّهْرِيِّ وَإِسْحَاقُ الْكَلْبِيُّ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ.

Anas b. Malik reported: I have never seen
anyone more kind to one’s family than Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), and Ibrahim
was sent to the suburb of Medina for suckling. He used to go there and we
accompanied him. He entered the house, and it was filled with smoke as his
foster-father was a blacksmith. He took him (his son Ibrahim) and kissed him
and then came back. ‘Amr said that when Ibrahim died. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: Ibrahim
is my son and he dies as a suckling babe. He has now two foster-mothers who
would complete his suckling period in Paradise
Narrated Anas bin Malik: We went with Allah’s
Messenger (ﷺ) to the blacksmith Abu Saif, and he was the husband of the
wet-nurse of Ibrahim (the son of the Prophet). Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) took Ibrahim
and kissed him and smelled him and later we entered Abu Saif’s house and at
that time Ibrahim was in his last breaths, and the eyes of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h)
started shedding tears. `Abdur Rahman bin `Auf said, “O Allah’s Apostle, even
you are weeping!” He said, “O Ibn `Auf, this is mercy.” Then he wept more and
said, “The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not
say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim! Indeed we are grieved by your
separation.”
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ
حَسَّانَ، حَدَّثَنَا قُرَيْشٌ ـ هُوَ ابْنُ حَيَّانَ ـ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ
بْنِ مَالِكٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ دَخَلْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله
عليه وسلم عَلَى أَبِي سَيْفٍ الْقَيْنِ ـ وَكَانَ ظِئْرًا لإِبْرَاهِيمَ ـ
عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ ـ فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِبْرَاهِيمَ
فَقَبَّلَهُ وَشَمَّهُ، ثُمَّ دَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ، وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ
يَجُودُ بِنَفْسِهِ، فَجَعَلَتْ عَيْنَا رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم
تَذْرِفَانِ. فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ
وَأَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ " يَا ابْنَ عَوْفٍ إِنَّهَا
رَحْمَةٌ ". ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهَا بِأُخْرَى فَقَالَ صلى الله عليه وسلم
" إِنَّ الْعَيْنَ تَدْمَعُ، وَالْقَلْبَ يَحْزَنُ، وَلاَ نَقُولُ إِلاَّ
مَا يَرْضَى رَبُّنَا، وَإِنَّا بِفِرَاقِكَ يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ لَمَحْزُونُونَ
". رَوَاهُ مُوسَى عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ
أَنَسٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم.

`Aisha:
A bedouin
came to the Prophet (ﷺ)
and said, "You (people) kiss the boys! We don't kiss them." The
Prophet said, "I cannot put mercy in your heart after Allah has taken it
away from it."

نُقَبِّلُهُمْ. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم " أَوَ أَمْلِكُ
لَكَ أَنْ نَزَعَ اللَّهُ مِنْ قَلْبِكَ الرَّحْمَةَ ".

Abu Huraira:
Allah's
Messenger (ﷺ)
kissed Al-Hasan bin `Ali while Al-Aqra' bin H`Abis at-Tamim was sitting beside
him. Al-Aqra said, "I have ten children and I have never kissed anyone of
them," Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) cast a look at him and said, "Whoever is not merciful to
others will not be treated mercifully."
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ،
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى
الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَبَّلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْحَسَنَ بْنَ
عَلِيٍّ وَعِنْدَهُ الأَقْرَعُ بْنُ حَابِسٍ التَّمِيمِيُّ جَالِسًا. فَقَالَ
الأَقْرَعُ إِنَّ لِي عَشَرَةً مِنَ الْوَلَدِ مَا قَبَّلْتُ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا.
فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ثُمَّ قَالَ " مَنْ
لاَ يَرْحَمُ لاَ يُرْحَمُ ".

went out during the day. Neither did he talk to me nor I to him till he reached
the market of Bani Qainuqa and then he sat in the compound of Fatima's house
and asked about the small boy (his grandson Al-Hasan) but Fatima kept the boy in
for a while. I thought she was either changing his clothes or giving the boy a
bath. After a while the boy came out running and the Prophet (ﷺ)
embraced and kissed him and then said, 'O Allah! Love him, and love whoever
loves him.'

حَتَّى أَتَى سُوقَ بَنِي قَيْنُقَاعَ، فَجَلَسَ بِفِنَاءِ بَيْتِ فَاطِمَةَ
فَقَالَ " أَثَمَّ لُكَعُ أَثَمَّ لُكَعُ ". فَحَبَسَتْهُ شَيْئًا
فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهَا تُلْبِسُهُ سِخَابًا أَوْ تُغَسِّلُهُ، فَجَاءَ يَشْتَدُّ حَتَّى
عَانَقَهُ وَقَبَّلَهُ، وَقَالَ " اللَّهُمَّ أَحْبِبْهُ وَأَحِبَّ مَنْ
يُحِبُّهُ ". قَالَ سُفْيَانُ قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنِي
أَنَّهُ رَأَى نَافِعَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ أَوْتَرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ.

Abu Dharr
narrated that the Messenger of Allah said :
"Your
smiling in the face of your brother is charity, commanding good and forbidding
evil is charity, your giving directions to a man lost in the land is charity
for you. Your seeing for a man with bad sight is a charity for you, your
removal of a rock, a thorn or a bone from the road is charity for you. Your
pouring what remains from your bucket into the bucket of your brother is
charity for you."

الْمُنْكَرِ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِرْشَادُكَ الرَّجُلَ فِي أَرْضِ الضَّلاَلِ لَكَ
صَدَقَةٌ وَبَصَرُكَ لِلرَّجُلِ الرَّدِيءِ الْبَصَرِ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِمَاطَتُكَ
الْحَجَرَ وَالشَّوْكَةَ وَالْعَظْمَ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَإِفْرَاغُكَ
مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي دَلْوِ أَخِيكَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ " . قَالَ وَفِي
الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَجَابِرٍ وَحُذَيْفَةَ وَعَائِشَةَ وَأَبِي
هُرَيْرَةَ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ . وَأَبُو
زُمَيْلٍ اسْمُهُ سِمَاكُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الْحَنَفِيُّ .

'Urwa bin
Zubair and Fatima daughter of Mandhir bin Zubair, reported that Asma' daughter
of Abu Bakr was at the time of migration in the family way with 'Abdullah bin
Zubair (in her womb). She came to Quba' and gave birth to 'Abdullah at that
place and then sent him to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) so that he should rub his palate with chewed dates. Allah's
Messenger (may peace he upon him) took hold of him (the child) and he placed
him in his lap and then called for dates. 'A'isha said: Some time was spent
before we were able to find them. He (the Holy Prophet) chewed them and then
put his saliva in his mouth. The first thing that entered his stomach, was the
saliva of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). Asma' said: He then rubbed him and blessed him and gave him
the name of Abdullah. He ('Abdullah) went to him (the Holy Prophet) when he had
attained the age of seven or eight years in order to pledge allegiance to
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
as Zubair had commanded him to do. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) smiled when he saw him coming towards him and then accepted
his allegiance.

مُوسَى أَبُو صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِسْحَاقَ -
أَخْبَرَنِي هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ،
وَفَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّهُمَا قَالاَ خَرَجَتْ
أَسْمَاءُ بِنْتُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حِينَ هَاجَرَتْ وَهِيَ حُبْلَى بِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ
بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقَدِمَتْ قُبَاءً فَنُفِسَتْ بِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بِقُبَاءٍ ثُمَّ
خَرَجَتْ حِينَ نُفِسَتْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لِيُحَنِّكَهُ
فَأَخَذَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنْهَا فَوَضَعَهُ فِي حَجْرِهِ
ثُمَّ دَعَا بِتَمْرَةٍ قَالَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَمَكَثْنَا سَاعَةً
نَلْتَمِسُهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ نَجِدَهَا فَمَضَغَهَا ثُمَّ بَصَقَهَا فِي فِيهِ
فَإِنَّ أَوَّلَ شَىْءٍ دَخَلَ بَطْنَهُ لَرِيقُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه
وسلم ثُمَّ قَالَتْ أَسْمَاءُ ثُمَّ مَسَحَهُ وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَسَمَّاهُ عَبْدَ
اللَّهِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ سَبْعِ سِنِينَ أَوْ ثَمَانٍ لِيُبَايِعَ
رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَأَمَرَهُ بِذَلِكَ الزُّبَيْرُ فَتَبَسَّمَ
رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم حِينَ رَآهُ مُقْبِلاً إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ

'Amir:
I heard
An-Nu`man bin Bashir on the pulpit saying, "My father gave me a gift but
`Amra bint Rawaha (my mother) said that she would not agree to it unless he
made Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
as a witness to it. So, my father went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
and said, 'I have given a gift to my son from `Amra bint Rawaha, but she
ordered me to make you as a witness to it, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!'
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
asked, 'Have you given (the like of it) to everyone of your sons?' He replied
in the negative. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'Be afraid of Allah, and be just to your children.' My
father then returned and took back his gift."
حَدَّثَنَا حَامِدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ
حُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ بَشِيرٍ ـ رضى الله
عنهما ـ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ أَعْطَانِي أَبِي عَطِيَّةً، فَقَالَتْ
عَمْرَةُ بِنْتُ رَوَاحَةَ لاَ أَرْضَى حَتَّى تُشْهِدَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله
عليه وسلم. فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ إِنِّي
أَعْطَيْتُ ابْنِي مِنْ عَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ رَوَاحَةَ عَطِيَّةً، فَأَمَرَتْنِي أَنْ
أُشْهِدَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ. قَالَ " أَعْطَيْتَ سَائِرَ وَلَدِكَ
مِثْلَ هَذَا ". قَالَ لاَ. قَالَ " فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ،
وَاعْدِلُوا بَيْنَ أَوْلاَدِكُمْ ". قَالَ فَرَجَعَ فَرَدَّ
عَطِيَّتَهُ.

Some of our companions narrated, from ‘Abdullaah bin Moosaa, from Ma’mar,
from azZuhree, from Anas that a man was with the Prophet ﷺ
and his son came to him so he kissed him and sat him on his thigh. Then his
daughter came and he sat her in front of him. The Prophet ﷺ
said, “Will you not treat them both equally?”

Ibn ‘Abbaas said, The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said, “Whoever has a daughter and does not bury her alive,
neither does he treat her badly nor does he unfairly treat his son better than
her will enter Paradise.”

`Abdullah bin Hisham: who was born during the lifetime of the
Prophet (ﷺ)
that his mother, Zainab bint Humaid had taken him to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said, O Allah's
Messenger (ﷺ)!
Take his Pledge of allegiance (for Islam). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, He (`Abdullah bin
Hisham) is a little child, and passed his hand over his head and invoked Allah
for him. `Abdullah bin Hisham used to slaughter one sheep as a sacrifice on
behalf of all of his family.

إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا
رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، بَايِعْهُ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ
وَسَلَّمَ : هُوَ صَغِيرٌ فَمَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ، وَدَعَا لَهُ ، وَكَانَ يُضَحِّي
بِالشَّاةِ الوَاحِدَةِ عَنْ جَمِيعِ أَهْلِهِ

Samura reported:
I prayed
along with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) the first prayer. He then went to his family and I also went
along with him when he met some children (on the way). He began to pat the
cheeks of each one of them. He also patted my cheek and I experienced a
coolness or a fragrance of his hand as if it had been brought out from the
scent bag of a perfumer.
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ حَمَّادِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ الْقَنَّادُ، حَدَّثَنَا
أَسْبَاطٌ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ نَصْرٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ - عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ
بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم صَلاَةَ
الأُولَى ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ وَخَرَجْتُ مَعَهُ فَاسْتَقْبَلَهُ
وِلْدَانٌ فَجَعَلَ يَمْسَحُ خَدَّىْ أَحَدِهِمْ وَاحِدًا وَاحِدًا - قَالَ -
وَأَمَّا أَنَا فَمَسَحَ خَدِّي - قَالَ - فَوَجَدْتُ لِيَدِهِ بَرْدًا أَوْ
رِيحًا كَأَنَّمَا أَخْرَجَهَا مِنْ جُؤْنَةِ عَطَّارٍ .

وَسلَّم على دابة ، وأنا وعبيد الله بن العباس وقُثَم نلعب ، فقال رسول الله صَلى

هذا ، فحمل قُثَم خلفه وترك عبيد الله ، ولم يستحي من عمه أن حمل قُثَم وترك عبيد
الله ، وكان عبيد الله أحب إلى العباس من قُثم ، فمسح رأسي ثم قال : اللهم اخلف
جعفرًا في ولده ، قلت : ما فعل قثم ، قال : استشهد ، قلت : الله ورسوله أعلم
بالخيرة ، قال : أجل.

was a boy of five, I remember, the Prophet (ﷺ) took water from a bucket (used for getting water out of a
well) with his mouth and threw it on my face.

A Jewish
boy used to serve the Prophet (ﷺ) and became ill. The Prophet (ﷺ) went to pay him a visit and said to him, "Embrace
Islam," and he did embrace Islam. Al-Musaiyab said: When Abu Talib was on
his deathbed, the Prophet (ﷺ) visited him.
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ،
عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ غُلاَمًا، لِيَهُودَ كَانَ
يَخْدُمُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَمَرِضَ. فَأَتَاهُ النَّبِيُّ صلى
الله عليه وسلم يَعُودُهُ فَقَالَ " أَسْلِمْ ". فَأَسْلَمَ. وَقَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ
الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، لَمَّا حُضِرَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ جَاءَهُ النَّبِيُّ صلى
الله عليه وسلم.

When
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
came to Medina; he did not have any servant. Abu Talha (Anas' step-father) took
me to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Anas is a wise boy, so let him serve you." So, I served
him at home and on journeys. If I did anything, he never asked me why I did it,
and if I refrained from doing anything, he never asked me why I refrained from
doing it.
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ

فَأَخَذَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ بِيَدِي، فَانْطَلَقَ بِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله
عليه وسلم فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَنَسًا غُلاَمٌ كَيِّسٌ،
فَلْيَخْدُمْكَ. قَالَ فَخَدَمْتُهُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْحَضَرِ، مَا قَالَ لِي
لِشَىْءٍ صَنَعْتُهُ لِمَ صَنَعْتَ هَذَا هَكَذَا وَلاَ لِشَىْءٍ لَمْ أَصْنَعْهُ
لِمَ لَمْ تَصْنَعْ هَذَا هَكَذَا

A drink
(of milk and water) was brought to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) while a boy was sitting on his right side and old men were
sitting on his left side. He asked the boy, "Will you allow me to give it
to these (people)?" The boy said, "No, by Allah, I will not allow
anyone to take my right from you." Then the Prophet put the bowl in the
boy's hand.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ
بْنِ سَعْدٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أُتِيَ
بِشَرَابٍ، وَعَنْ يَمِينِهِ غُلاَمٌ وَعَنْ يَسَارِهِ أَشْيَاخٌ، فَقَالَ
لِلْغُلاَمِ " أَتَأْذَنُ لِي أَنْ أُعْطِيَ هَؤُلاَءِ ". فَقَالَ
الْغُلاَمُ لاَ، وَاللَّهِ لاَ أُوثِرُ بِنَصِيبِي مِنْكَ أَحَدًا. فَتَلَّهُ
فِي يَدِهِ.

Narrated
Um Khalid bint Khalid:
The
Prophet (ﷺ)
was given some clothes including a black Khamisa. The Prophet (ﷺ)
said, "To whom shall we give this to wear?" The people kept silent
whereupon the Prophet (ﷺ)
said, "Fetch Um Khalid for me." I (Um Khalid) was brought carried (as
I was small girl at that time). The Prophet (ﷺ) took the Khamisa in his hands and made me wear it and said,
"May you live so long that your dress will wear out and you will mend it
many times." On the Khamisa there were some green or pale designs (The
Prophet (ﷺ)
saw these designs) and said, "O Um Khalid! This is Sanah." (Sanah is
an Ethiopian word meaning beautiful).
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ
أَبِيهِ، سَعِيدِ بْنِ فُلاَنٍ ـ هُوَ عَمْرُو بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ ـ عَنْ
أُمِّ خَالِدٍ بِنْتِ خَالِدٍ، أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِثِيَابٍ
فِيهَا خَمِيصَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ صَغِيرَةٌ فَقَالَ " مَنْ تَرَوْنَ نَكْسُو
هَذِهِ ". فَسَكَتَ الْقَوْمُ قَالَ " ائْتُونِي بِأُمِّ خَالِدٍ
". فَأُتِيَ بِهَا تُحْمَلُ فَأَخَذَ الْخَمِيصَةَ بِيَدِهِ
فَأَلْبَسَهَا وَقَالَ " أَبْلِي وَأَخْلِقِي ". وَكَانَ فِيهَا
عَلَمٌ أَخْضَرُ أَوْ أَصْفَرُ فَقَالَ " يَا أُمَّ خَالِدٍ هَذَا سَنَاهْ
". وَسَنَاهْ بِالْحَبَشِيَّةِ حَسَنٌ.

Ibn `Abbas:
Once the
Prophet (ﷺ)
entered a lavatory and I placed water for his ablution. He asked, "Who
placed it?" He was informed accordingly and so he said, "O Allah!
Make him (Ibn `Abbas) a learned scholar in religion (Islam).
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ
الْقَاسِمِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وَرْقَاءُ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي
يَزِيدَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم دَخَلَ
الْخَلاَءَ، فَوَضَعْتُ لَهُ وَضُوءًا قَالَ " مَنْ وَضَعَ هَذَا
". فَأُخْبِرَ فَقَالَ " اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ
".

Anas:
My mother
said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Please invoke Allah on behalf of your servant." He said,
"O Allah! Increase his wealth and children, and bestow Your Blessing on
whatever You give him."
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي الأَسْوَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرَمِيٌّ،
حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَتْ
أُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ خَادِمُكَ أَنَسٌ ادْعُ اللَّهَ لَهُ. قَالَ " اللَّهُمَّ أَكْثِرْ
مَالَهُ وَوَلَدَهُ، وَبَارِكْ لَهُ فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَهُ ".

‘Abdullaah narrated that I used to be a shepherd for ‘Uqbah bin Abee Mu’ayt.
The Propeht ﷺ
passed by me while I was a child and said to me, “O youth do you have any milk?”
I said, “Yes but I am entrusted” so he said “Do you have a sheep that has not delivered
a lamb?” So I brought one to him and he stroked its teat and milk came out so
he milked it into a container. He drank it and gave some to Aboo Bakr then he
said to the teat, “Contract” and it contracted. I said, “O Messenger of Allaah!
Teach me from this speech. So he rubbed my head and said “Allaah have mercy
upon you! Indeed you are a young teacher.”

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَعْشَرٍ بِحَرَّانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ كُرَيْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ
، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ زِرٍّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَرْعَى
غَنَمًا لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ ، فَمَرَّ بِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ
عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا غُلَامٌ فَقَالَ لِي : يَا غُلَامُ ، هَلْ مِنْ لَبَنٍ
؟ قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، وَلَكِنِّي مُؤْتَمَنٌ ، قَالَ : فَهَلْ مِنْ شَاةٍ لَمْ
يَنْزُ عَلَيْهَا الْفَحْلُ ؟ قَالَ : فَأَتَيْتُهُ ، فَمَسَحَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ
عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ضَرْعَهَا ، فَنَزَلَ اللَّبَنُ فَحَلَبَهُ فِي إِنَاءٍ ،
فَشَرِبَ وَسَقَى أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، ثُمَّ ، قَالَ لِلضَّرْعِ : انْقَلِصِي
فَانْقَلَصَتْ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلِّمْنِي مِنْ هَذَا الْقَوْلِ
، فَمَسَحَ رَأْسِي وَقَالَ : يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ إِنَّكَ غُلَامٌ مُعَلَّمٌ

reported:
Allah's
Messenger (ﷺ)
came to me as I was playing with playmates. He greeted and sent me on an errand
and I made delay in going to my mother. When I came to her she said: What
detained you? I said: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent me on an errand. She said: What was the purpose? I said:
It is something secret. Therupon she said: Do not then divulge the secret of
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
to anyone. Anas said: By Allah, if I were to divulge it to anyone, then, O
Thabit, I would have divulged it to you.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا
حَمَّادٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ أَتَى عَلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
صلى الله عليه وسلم وَأَنَا أَلْعَبُ مَعَ الْغِلْمَانِ - قَالَ - فَسَلَّمَ
عَلَيْنَا فَبَعَثَنِي إِلَى حَاجَةٍ فَأَبْطَأْتُ عَلَى أُمِّي فَلَمَّا جِئْتُ
قَالَتْ مَا حَبَسَكَ قُلْتُ بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم
لِحَاجَةٍ . قَالَتْ مَا حَاجَتُهُ قُلْتُ إِنَّهَا سِرٌّ . قَالَتْ لاَ
تُحَدِّثَنَّ بِسِرِّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَحَدًا . قَالَ
أَنَسٌ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ حَدَّثْتُ بِهِ أَحَدًا لَحَدَّثْتُكَ يَا ثَابِتُ . Sahih Muslim 2482 a

Narrated
`Aisha:
I used to
play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also
used to play with me. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide
themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ،
عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ قَالَتْ كُنْتُ أَلْعَبُ
بِالْبَنَاتِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَكَانَ لِي صَوَاحِبُ
يَلْعَبْنَ مَعِي، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا دَخَلَ
يَتَقَمَّعْنَ مِنْهُ، فَيُسَرِّبُهُنَّ إِلَىَّ فَيَلْعَبْنَ مَعِي.
